Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: A quarter of electricity produced in 2019 was unbilled and lost

Praia,Oct.30,2020(Lusa)- Almost a quarter of all electricity produced in Cabo Verde in 2019 was reported as lost and not billed, a slight recovery from the previous year, according to the latest report and accounts of the state-owned Electra group.
According to data in the group's latest report (which includes Electra SA, Electra Norte and Electra Sul), to which Lusa had access on Friday, overall electricity losses, including technical and non-technical situations such as illegal connections, reached 110 GigaWatts-hour (GWh) in 2019, equivalent to 24.8% of total production for the year.
This is a recovery of 0.7% compared to 25.5% in 2018.
"The levels of losses and customer debts continue to be the main constraints on the company, which is thus deprived of important resources. Although there has been a slight reduction compared to the previous year," the report and accounts said.
It added that the results of that state-owned electricity and water production and distribution group - which the government plans to privatise - continue to be impacted by the negative performance of the company Electra Sul (which serves the southern islands of the archipelago, notably Santiago, where most of the population live, particularly given the levels of commercial losses (mainly in Praia) and the volume of customer debts.
Overall, the total energy produced in 2019 in the archipelago was 443.6 GWh, representing an increase of 14.1 GWh (3.3%) compared to the same period in 2018, while the total penetration rate of renewable energies fell by 2.2 percentage points to 18.6% of the total, coming from wind farms (600 KW) and solar photovoltaic parks (6,750 KW), but also from private wind farms (23,450 KW) installed on the islands of Santiago, São Vicente, Sal and Santo Antão.
"Negotiations are currently underway with new promoters (PPP - Public-Private Partnerships) for the installation of a new 10 MW solar photovoltaic plant on the island of Santiago," the company said.
Meanwhile, drinking water production grew to 8.5 million cubic metres in 2019, while the number of electricity service customers rose to 152,924 and water to 29,469.
The Electra group closed 2019 with 805 employees, almost the same number as the previous year.
