Lusa - Business News - Angola: Arrests 'worrying decline in press freedom' - Reporters Without Borders

Luanda, Oct.29,2020 (Lusa) - Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a Paris-based non-governmental organisation that works to defend freedom of the press, on Thursday warned of a "worrying decline in press freedom" in Angola, after several journalists were detained and assaulted during a demonstration in Luanda on Saturday, and described this as a "worrying setback.
In a statement, RSF called on the Angolan authorities not to resort to methods of dealing with the media and free expression that hark back to the "dark days of the dictatorship.
Over 100 people who were protesting on Saturday for better living conditions and for the holding of local election, were detained on criminal charges of riot and damage to public property, with the trial set to take place this week.
During the demonstration two journalists, Suely Moreno and Carlos Tomé, a photographer, Santos Samuesseca, and their driver, Leonardo Franciso, all from Radio Essencial, a local broadcaster, were arrested and detained by police, according to RSF "without just cause", and only released on Monday.
According to RSF, two journalists from TV Zimbo and two photographers from Agence France Press - named as Georges Nsimba and Osvaldo Silva - were also detained and released a few hours later, with Silva reporting "police aggression" and saying that they had been "forced to delete the images" that they had taken during the protest.
"By covering a demonstration, the journalists were doing nothing but their work," said Arnaud Froger, head of RSF's Africa office.
This "wave of arrests and aggressions", he said, constituted "a worrying setback that recalls the dark moments of the dictatorship.
"Three years after the fall of President José Eduardo dos Santos, freedom of the press is still a largely unfinished business in Angola", he said.
Dos Santos served as head of state until 2017, when he did not stand again. He was replaced by his former protegé, João Lourenço, who has taken a series of actions seen as undermining the powerful dos Santos family.
According to Froger, if the Angolan authorities "sincerely wish to turn the page on years of predation of information, they have no choice but to condemn such acts and punish their offenders."
RSF says that it had in October already documented "serious threats" against "various Angolan media and journalists for their coverage of the Edeltrudes Costa case" - a reference to an investigation into the head of the current president's office for suspected embezzlement.
"The independent news website Correio Angolense, as well as the freelance journalist and former RSF correspondent, Siona Casimiro, were targets of cyber attacks, and journalist Carlos Rosado de Carvalho was censored by several channels with which he collaborated," the RSF statement reads.
On Thursday, at the opening of the fourth ordinary session of the central committee of the MPLA, the party that has been in power since 1975), Lourenço expressed regret at the detentions of "duly accredited" journalists and said that he hoped that such situations "will not occur again in the country".
Angola 106th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Ranking established by RSF for 2020.
