Lusa - Business News - Equatorial-Guinea: Change at top of finance ministry

Malabo, Oct. 28, 2020 (Lusa) - The president of Equatorial Guinea appointed Valentín Ela Maye as Equatorial Guinea's new finance minister, replacing César Augusto Mba Abogo, who had survived the government reshuffle in mid-August.
Maye, until now deputy minister of finance, economy and planning, was instructed by Teodoro Obiang Nguema to give priority to the search for mechanisms, according to the official website of the Equato-Guinean government, to tackle at the same time the economic crisis created by the fall in oil prices and the health crisis of Covid-19.
At the swearing in ceremony, on Tuesday, Obiang also instructed the new minister to develop policies that would stimulate taxpayers' awareness of their obligations, pointing to the need for the country to boost tax revenues.
The change in the Finance and Economy portfolio took place a few months after the resignation en bloc of the current prime minister's government, Francisco Pascual Obama, and in the context of growing economic difficulties, which led the executive to take drastic measures, including redundancies in several public companies.
Obiang himself stressed that economic reasons justified the dissolution of the previous government and that the new executive, although fundamentally the same, should seek specific and viable solutions to the current problems faced by the countries of the world and the economic problems.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on Wednesday said that Equatorial Guinea will need more financial aid in addition to the IMF programme, foreseeing a 5.5% drop in GDP in 2021.
In a note on the economy of this Portuguese-language country, sent to clients and accessed by Lusa, analysts estimate that Equatorial Guinea faces a recession of 12.7% of GDP this year and that by 2021 the economy will collapse again, contrary to what the IMF predicts, which sees the economy already recovering next year.
Since its independence from Spain in 1968, Equatorial Guinea has been considered by human rights groups as one of the most repressive countries in the world due to allegations of detention and torture of dissidents and electoral fraud.
Obiang, who has led the country since 1979 when he overthrew his uncle Francisco Macias in a coup d'état, is the longest-serving president in the world.
Equatorial Guinea has been a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) since 2014.
