Lusa - Business News - Equatorial Guinea: IMF funding 'not enough' as GDP to shrink 5.5% in 2021 - EIU

London, Oct. 28, 2020 (Lusa) - Equatorial Guinea will need more financial assistance in addition to its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and its economy is set to shrink by around 5.5% next year, largely as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a UK-based consultancy that is a unit of the company that publishes The Economist.
In a note on the country, which is the newest member of the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP), EIU analysts write that they anticipate that it will need assistance beyond its current IMF funding package; meeting the preconditions for funding from creditors will be a top political priority, with the government seeking ways to cope with the pandemic's strong impact on revenues.
In a note, which was sent to clients and has been seen by Lusa, the analysts estimate that Equatorial Guinea's gross domestic product is set to shrink this year, by 12.7%, and again in 2021 - contrary to the IMF's official forecasts, which project an economic recover for next year.
Still, the EIU analysts do not foresee a crisis in terms of debt payments, as the country likely seeks expanded financial assistance from multilateral creditors. Equatorial Guinea should, they argue, continue to meet the conditions of the $282.8-million (€240-million) IMF programme that it signed last December, reflecting the government's increased need for emergency concessional loans to manage the current account deficit and its growing external public debt.
In addition to this year's deep recession, which follows the economic damage already seen in recent years, the pandemic has delayed government plans to boost the economy in 2020 by attracting more foreign investment through its Year of Investment programme, the analysts note.
Equatorial Guinea has reported 83 deaths associated with Covid-19 and 5,083 cases of the novel coronavirus that causes it, putting it about middle of the table among CPLP member countries in Africa, in terms of official statistics.
Angola had reported 271 deaths and 9,871 cases, Cabo Verde 94 deaths and 8,472 cases, Mozambique 89 deaths and 12,273 cases, Guinea-Bissau 41 deaths and 2,413 cases, and Sao Tome and Principe 15 deaths and 941 cases.
In Africa as a whole, the number of deaths associated with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours for which official figures are available was 182, for a total so far of 41,791. Cumulative infections were up 8,662 to 1,736,499.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the organisation's 55 member states there are 7,242 patients deemed to have recovered from the disease, out of a total of 1,423,342 cases.
The first case of Covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February.
Worldwide, Covid-19 has so far caused more than 1.1 million deaths and more than 43.5 million cases of infection worldwide.
