Lusa - Business News - Portugal: New routes from Porto 'make a loss' for TAP - Minister

Lisbon, Oct.16,2020(Lusa) - The four routes created at Porto airport, after the state took a more assertive position at TAP, currently make a loss for the airline, the minister of infrastructure and housing said on Friday.

In a hearing at the Commission for Economy, Innovation, Public Works and Housing, in parliament, Pedro Nuno Santos said that the four routes created from Porto airport to Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich and Ponta Delgada have an average capacity of 46% and are currently making a loss for TAP.

The minister said that he is studying the reinforcement of TAP Express/Portugalia's fleet to operate from Porto and Faro to other European airports, on point-to-point connections, to try to make TAP more competitive, namely against 'low-cost' airlines.

In the future, we want a sustainable TAP that can maintain its strategy as a 'hub' and reinforce it on a point-to-point basis, he said, pointing out that ithey are evaluating whether it is possible to combine the two strategies.

Pedro Nuno Santos also said that he had a good relationship with the regional government of Madeira and highlighted TAP's role in flights to the islands, pointing out that if it was easy to offer low prices when connecting to the autonomous regions, there would be more companies to do.

The minister also rejected the possibility of supporting the entire aviation sector, given the huge amounts involved.

As for the restructuring plan for the company, which is being prepared by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the government stressed that the final decision rests with the shareholders and that this work is advisory.
