Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Number of infected Erasmus students in Porto rises to 145

Porto, Oct. 16, 2020 (Lusa) - The number of Erasmus students infected with the new coronavirus in Porto has risen to 145, with 101 from the University of Porto (U. Porto), 29 from the Polytechnic Institute (IPP) and 15 from the Catholic University, the institutions said.

The communication office of U. Porto reported that 19 more positive cases of Erasmus students (academic mobility among students from all over the world) were detected, increasing from 82 to 101 the number of those infected with Covid-19.

The IPP communication office said on Thursday that no more positive cases were detected, maintaining the 29 cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2 already confirmed in the mobility program in this educational establishment.

On Tuesday, in response to Lusa, the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) revealed that 15 positive cases of students in the Erasmus mobility programme were detected on its campus in Porto and that the infections were contracted outside the premises.

Considering these three institutions, 145 infected Erasmus students are studying in Porto.

At IPP there are also seven national students with Covid-19.

In a communiqué released on Thursday night, U. Porto clarified that its positive cases are distributed among several faculties and several courses.

This reinforces the conviction of the health authorities that the contagion has occurred outside the context of classes or other activities within the university, they added.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than one million ninety-three thousand deaths and more than 38.5 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,128 people have died out of 93,294 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent health authority bulletin.
