Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Country to export hydrogen produced from renewables to Netherlands

Lisbon, Sept. 23, 2020 (Lusa) - Portugal will produce hydrogen from renewable sources to export to the Netherlands, both countries agreed on Wednesday with a common memorandum, the Ministry of Environment said.
In a statement, the Ministry stated that the understanding will link the hydrogen plans of Portugal and the Netherlands for 2030, providing for the production and transport of green hydrogen from Portugal to the Netherlands on a connection between the ports of Sines and Rotterdam.
This bilateral collaboration may eventually apply for an Important Project of Common European Interest, which enables European funding for shared projects of member states.
Portugal and the Netherlands want the creation of a real international hydrogen market, with market rules that allow its export.
In the Big Options Plan, Portugal assumes that the project should start to be implemented next year, also stating that during 2020, the necessary procedures applicable to the various aspects of the value chain of renewable gases will be approved, including the licensing of installations and the regulation of hydrogen injection in natural gas networks.
