CNA - East Mediterranean Gas Forum members sign statute establishing this regional forum (2)

CNA - Athena Arsalidou - Nicosia
The East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) members signed on Tuesday during a ceremony which was held online, the statute establishing this regional intergovernmental forum.

The founding members of the forum are Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority. The Forum`s headquarters are in Cairo.

Cyprus was represented by Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Natasa Pilides, who in her speech noted that any country or organisation in the region could apply to join the Forum and said "may today mark a long, strong and fruitful collaboration".

She said that today`s ceremony is an indication of strong bonds of our countries. I believe we can be proud of this historic day one that marks a true milestone, she said, noting that this initiative is crucial in advancing stability and prosperity in our shared region.

The Minister recalled that the Republic of Cyprus has been supporting this initiative from the very beginning

"Established on the fundamental principle of fully respecting the members rights over their natural resources in accordance with international law, the EMGF is intended to foster collaboration to a structured and systematic dialogue on natural gas issues, without being exclusionary or exclusive and in fact as stated in the newly agreed statute any Eastern Mediterranean country can apply for membership and any other country, regional or international organisation can apply to join us as observer" the Minister said.

The ceremony was opened by Tarek El-Molla Egyptian Minister of Petroleum & Mineral Resources, who said that the Forum is open and looks forward to the membership of other countries in the region as long as they are in accordance with the Forum`s principles and share the same objectives for the welfare of the region and its people.

He stressed that it is also imperative to ensure that no aggressive actions are embraced by any country thus hindering and obstructing the prosperity of the region.

He added that the EMGF represents a long shared history and a common prosperous future with natural gas being the driving engine for decades to come.

Greek Minister of Energy Kostis Hatzidakis said that this is a historic day because the countries confirm that they are ready to overcome tensions and problems and cooperate to the benefit of their peoples.

Instead of using energy to cultivate tension, we use energy as a catalyst to enhance our cooperation in this field, he said.

In their speeches, the Ministers of Israel, Jordan and Italy also welcomed the signing of the statute, noting its importance for the region and the benefits for all people.

The European Commission also welcomed the establishment of the Forum, a representative of which said during the ceremony that energy should be a catalyst of stability, prosperity, security in the region. She noted that the establishment of the Forum has a geopolitical, economic and symbolic value.

She also said that the EU will give its full support and that the Forum is open to other countries and organisations in the region sharing the same values.
