Lusa - Business News - Equatorial Guinea: Daily oil production rises to 118,000 barrels in August

Malabo,Sept.15,2020(Lusa)–Daily oil production in Equatorial Guinea rose in August to 118,000 barrels, an increase of about 11,000 barrels per day, according to data released by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
OPEC's latest monthly report, published on Monday and based on secondary sources from the organization, shows that Equatorial Guinea's oil production grew in August after a sharp drop in July.
In June, OPEC's count was 117,000 barrels per day, and this production would decrease in the following month to about 106,000 barrels per day.
Equatorial Guinea was the second country with the lowest oil production in August among the 13 OPEC members, ahead of Libya (106,000 barrels per day) and behind Gabon (181,000 barrels), Republic of Congo (277,000 barrels) and Venezuela (340,000 barrels).
The OPEC report also includes "direct communications" data from Equatorial Guinea, which point to an increase in the order of 1,000 barrels of daily oil production to 117,000 barrels in August from 116,000 in July.
In the last 20 years, the exploitation of oil resources has been the main pillar for the growth of this economy.
To avoid a high dependency on oil exploration, the African Development Bank (ADB) committed last September to support economic diversification in the country through a program that will focus, among others, on agriculture.
According to ADB data, the fall in oil prices affected public investments, which in 2017 represented 17.2% of Equatorial Guinea's GDP, down from 24.6% in 2013.
Due to the consequences of the pandemic, with the impact on the economy and the decrease in consumption, the OPEC Joint Technical Committee has been recommending cuts in oil production.
In today's paper, OPEC has worsened forecasts for world oil consumption in 2020 and 2021 due to uncertainty about the effect of a second wave of the pandemic on the global economy.
According to OPEC, oil consumption will fall this year by 9.5 million barrels per day - equivalent to 9.5% - compared to 2019, 400,000 more barrels per day than just a month ago, bringing the total daily consumption to 90.2 million barrels per day.
Last month OPEC had already reduced its consumption forecasts by 100,000 barrels per day, so in the last two months the organization based in Vienna, has lowered oil consumption forecasts by half a million barrels per day.
Oil prices fell back to below $40 after rising Covid-19 contagions in the major economies raised doubts about a sustained recovery.
The pandemic hit oil demand because of the global economic slowdown, with restrictions on circulation, teleworking and reduced travel causing falling energy consumption.
