Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Russian trade body sees business opportunities in interior of Portugal

Covilhã, Castelo Branco, Aug. 14, 2020 (Lusa) - The Russian Chamber of Commerce in Portugal sees several business opportunities with companies in the interior of the country and is available to promote such exchange, pointed out the president of the organization, Igor Zolkin on Friday.
At the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce of the Beiras Region, Zolkin is conducting a three-day visit to the municipalities of Fundão and Covilhã, in the district of Castelo Branco, and has already presented business proposals to some companies in different sectors.
Besides business meetings, the program of this visit also included the signing of a protocol between the Chamber of Commerce of the Beiras Region and the Russian Chamber of Commerce in Portugal, in a partnership that establishes the common goal of contributing to the dynamization of the economy of both countries, through the promotion of business contacts and tourism promotion.
The cooperation between the two entities was officialized today, but the joint work had been initiated before, as the leaders of these two chambers of commerce stressed, during the session that took place after a visit to the tourist resort "Minas da Recheira", which is being created in the locality of Barco, municipality of Covilhã.
"We are doing this, not because we wanted to sign another collaboration agreement. We are doing this because we already have some joint projects to carry out", Igor Zolkin stressed.
According to him, the implementation of these projects may involve different businesses, namely the possibility of Russia supplying Portugal with products such as plywood, mushrooms and gluten-free flour, among others.
On the other hand, he considers that the region may focus on exporting products such as wine, olives, olive oil, footwear, clothing and textiles, among other Portuguese products that are highly appreciated in Russia.
He also admitted that he has a high expectation in terms of results: "My experience tells me that when we have ten projects, at least two are achieved. Well, here we have more than ten".
Another opportunity for Portugal is the possibility of attracting tourism from Russia, as the president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Beiras Region, Ana Correia, pointed out.
Ana Correia also announced that an economic congress is already being prepared to be held in the city of Fundão and that it will have an entourage from the Russian locality of Uvarovo, constituting itself as an opportunity for the entrepreneurs of both territories to establish contacts and present their capital gains.
The colloquium is being scheduled for November, but the confirmation of the date will depend on the evolution of the pandemic situation.
In the meantime, several contacts are following and there are already some concrete business proposals, which "will certainly bear fruit in a short period of time", pointed out the vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Beiras Region, João Morgado.
"Often protocols are signed only as good intentions. In this case we've gone the other way around, there are already commercial contacts, there are already things on the ground and only now are we going to sign the protocol, basically, to make official the work that is already being done".
In addition, as announced today by the heads of these two chambers of commerce, a twinning arrangement is also being prepared between Fundão (the municipality with the largest cherry production area in Portugal) and the town of Uvarovo, which is considered the cherry capital of Russia.
