Lusa - Business News - Angola: Scammers use TAP name in Luanda to extort money from passengers

Luanda,Aug 14,2020(Lusa)-A Facebook page called TAP Air Portugal Luanda is being used for a scam involving charges on cancelled flights and the sale of non-existent tickets.

The complaint came from a passenger who was to fly from Luanda to Lisbon on 14 August, a flight that has since been cancelled, and after successive unsuccessful attempts to contact TAP's 'call centre', ended up on the "TAP Air Portugal Luanda" page on Facebook.

"As I was very desperate to travel, I called and they said that the flight would take place on 16 August, but I would have to pay a fee to issue a new ticket," Brazilian businessman Carlos A. told Lusa, who later realised he had been the victim of fraud.

The fraudsters started by charging 98,888 kwanzas (€142), an amount that would have to be paid in 40 minutes and that Carlos A. paid, as proof sent to Lusa.

The businessman immediately received new contact, demanding more money, alleging a mistake.

Mr. "Carlos is having a complication due to the value (sic). It was our mistake, the value is not being compatible, the amount to pay is AOA 178,888.00 (€257). Be brief", the messages he received said.

That's when the alarms went off. "Then I got suspicious and went to find the physical store of TAP," he said.

TAP has two physical stores in Luanda (in the city and at the airport) closed, but Carlos A. found a notice at the door, dated 19 February, saying that TAP "is not responsible for transactions for payment of TAP services that are made by third parties" and making available for contact the email tapluanda@tap.pt and phones +244 923 167 300/1/2/9/18.

"I fell into this trap," said the businessman, who has already filed a complaint with the police.

"In the rush and anxiety, at a time when the country finds itself with closed borders and airports, with no one to talk to and clear up doubts", the "desperation" spoke louder and Carlos A. ended up being swindled.

The businessman regrets never having been able to talk to TAP: "on the official TAP page there is a post where they admit the difficulty in answering, they say they take time to attend, but the truth is that I could not even be attended".

Carlos A. also said that the scammers have already contacted him again, using three different mobile numbers, in an attempt to extort more money.

Lusa contacted one of the numbers provided by the page with the supposed intention of acquiring a round-trip ticket Luanda-Lisbon-Luanda.

On the other side, a supposed employee at the TAP counter in Luanda indicated he had five tickets available for a Luanda-Lisbon flight on 20 August, which could guarantee a return to the Angolan capital on September 17.

The person, who identified himself as Camilo Mujingo, asked for a photograph of the passport, to send the bank details and payment should be made in 45 minutes, after which the ticket would be issued.

According to him, the one-way ticket would cost 269,999 kwanzas (€389) and a return ticket 423,444 kwanzas (€610), "promotional prices".

Contacted by Lusa, TAP informed that whenever it detects this type of fraud it reports the respective pages to Facebook, which has already been done in the case in question.

"In addition, TAP has also complained to the Angolan authorities," said the airline's source, pointing out that the contacts "in the aforementioned fraudulent post" are not from TAP.

TAP also reinforced the warning to its passengers not to share any personal data with profiles or pages other than the company's official ones.
