Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Staycations boost bookings in small, medium tourist developments

Coimbra, Portugal, Aug. 14, 2020 (Lusa) - Tourist resorts in the central interior of Portugal essentially small and medium-sized, are receiving more Portuguese tourists, who stay more nights in search of safe, isolated places because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to several sources in the sector heard by Lusa, the option to take vacations in the interior, instead of destinations abroad, after months of confinement due to the new coronavirus, has led to an increase in the number of families seeking safety in destinations with lower population density and these broke occupancy records in June and July.

The president of Turismo Centro de Portugal (TCP), Pedro Machado, confirmed this trend, supporting it with numbers: the average number of nights reserved in the total of eight intermunicipal communities (Aveiro Region, Viseu Dão-Lafões, Coimbra Region, Serra da Estrela, Leiria Region, Médio Tejo, Oeste and Beira Baixa) that integrate the tourism region of the centre "grew from 1.6 to 1.9", approaching the two nights of average stay, a long-term goal.

"People are discovering Portuguese hospitality which is unique and with it a diversity of reasons of interest that exist in the Centre", Pedro Machado stressed, noting that the motto of the TCP - "discover a country within the country" - has been fulfilled in recent months by more and more Portuguese.

In the Schist Villages network - which includes 27 locations, more than half (17) located in the mountains of Lousã and Açor and the rest near the Zêzere and Tejo/Ocreza basins - the executive director Rui Simão is cautious about the possible benefits of the pandemic in tourism in the region, saying that, although the brand he directs has already passed the affirmation period and has loyal customers, "nobody is well when the country is bad".

The difference has been noted in the type of demand that the network has observed this year in the summer months: "A house with a swimming pool and barbecue is no longer available in June, July and August. And the lodging is no longer sold by the room but the whole house", noted Rui Simão.

On the other hand, if until now the "little getaways" of "two or three nights" and many couples prevailed, now the Schist Villages are beginning to feel changes in the type of reservations, since they are "more national and especially families looking for a large space", but also in the duration "that reaches five, six and seven nights", said the executive director.

The Schist Villages network has its own booking platform, which also makes it possible to see, for example, that those who take responsibility for Internet bookings are "mainly women between the ages of 25 and 45.

"Two-thirds are women for one-third are men. Somehow it's women who take responsibility for the family," Rui Simão stressed.

Reservations and stays in Schist Villages in June and July were, according to Rui Simão, "very intense and exceeded expectations" and August, a traditional holiday month in Portugal, "is keeping what is normal.

"But September usually falls off and this year we still don't know how it's going to be, not least because there will be reservations at short notice," he admitted.

In the network of Historic Villages of Portugal (AHP), which brings together 12 localities from ten municipalities in the districts of Coimbra, Guarda and Castelo Branco, but whose territory extends to ten other municipalities, one of the strategies for attracting visitors was to schedule the event "12 in Network - Villages in Party" for the months of September to November.

The cycle of 12 events, one day per historical village, in spaces duly adapted to the current sanitary rules, will have a limited public, with places available for local residents and visitors.

"In the first week of September, the accommodations in the centre of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo [where the program runs on the 6th] are already sold out. And in the first week of October, those in Piodão [in the municipality of Arganil] are also full," says Dalila Dias, executive director of Aldeias Históricas de Portugal (AHP).

The Covid-19 pandemic proved to be "a new opportunity" to attract new clients she said, specifically from the upper-middle class, "many of whom, at the time, usually travelled abroad and now stayed in Portugal".

The choice of historic villages is not limited to the built heritage itself - it extends to sustainable tourism practices at an economic, social and natural level, which made it the first national destination (and also the first in a network, worldwide) to receive Biosphere certification, approved by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
