Lusa - Business News - Macau: Chinese version of guide to invest in Portuguese-speaking countries

Macau, China, Aug. 14, 2020 (Lusa) - The Chinese version of a guide to investing in Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) and Timor-Leste was launched by Legis-PALOP+TL, in partnership with MacauLink, with the support of companies and institutions in Macau.

In a press release, the media group MacauLink described the "Guide for Investing in the PALOP - Forms of Foreign Investment in the PALOP and East Timor" as "a practical tool" to access information on six legal systems: Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Príncipe and East Timor.

The coordinator of Legis-PALOP+TL said that the Chinese version of this publication "is (...) essential for entrepreneurs, Chinese policymakers and assets or potential investors in Portuguese-speaking Africa and East Timor".

"We are sure that this publication will help in future investments in these markets," added Teresa Amador, quoted in the same note.

Legis-PALOP+TL is the official legal database containing legislation, jurisprudence and doctrine from Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Príncipe and East Timor.

The director of MacauLink stressed that "the publication of this guide is proof of the vitality of the private sector in Macau, which is making a significant contribution to promoting economic and trade relations between China and Portuguese-speaking countries through the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR)".

"It is even more extraordinary that, in a difficult context throughout the world, a major Macau investor in Portugal, a major Macau financial institution and one of the most dynamic research centres in the MSAR have come together to support this launch," said Gonçalo César de Sá.

The Executive Chairman of Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU), Carlos Cid Álvares, said the publication would be an "important tool in terms of reducing risks and encouraging investors (...) and will actively promote investments".

The president of the Institute of European Studies of Macau, José Sales Marques, stressed that investors will find a "relevant foreign investment structure, working environment, taxes and other important information on useful laws and regulations that contribute to business success" in the publication.

The Macau entrepreneur and wine producer in Alenquer Wu Zhiwei said the guide will facilitate a "better understanding of the business structure" of the Portuguese-speaking countries.

China established Macau SAR as a platform for economic and trade cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries in 2003.

The Portuguese-speaking countries and China recorded trade of USD 51.8 billion (€43.8 billion) in the first five months of the year.

Brazil continues to be by far the Portuguese-speaking country with the largest volume of trade with China, guaranteeing more than 80% of the goods traded, followed by Angola, Portugal, Mozambique, East Timor, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome and Príncipe.
