Lusa - Business News - Macau: Campaign to promote region to Chinese tourist taken up by 20,000 traders

Macau, China, Aug. 13, 2020 (Lusa) - More than 20,000 shops in Macau are participating in a campaign to promote the region to tourists in mainland China, in a bid to take advantage of the gradual resumption of the issuance of visas that has been announced.
Visas are already being issued in the neighbouring city of Zhuhai, and the plans are to extend this on 26 August to the whole of Guangdong province. If the Covid-19 situation remains stable, visas will from 23 September be issued to people living in the rest of mainland China, which is Macau's main tourist market.
The region's Tourism Bureau (DST) and the Economic Services Bureau (DSE) are supporting the Alipay digital platform in this "festival of mega-promotions", as it is being called, focussing on Guangdong province.
"Through promotional activities and discounts, the initiative aims to promote in Guangdong products and stores with Macau's characteristic brands, to attract visitors from the neighbouring province ..., boosting the revitalisation of ... the city's tourism industry," the DST said in a news release. "More than 20,000 stores in the Alipay payment system network in Macau have launched a series of discounts and promotions, in line with the challenge launched by the 'Vamos! Macau!' electronic platform created by DST."
The DST is also promoting the Alipay festival via several online channels, while Alipay is in Guangdong highlighting on its own digital platform a number of Macau's leading brands and stores.
The initiative is to run until 31 October.
"With the gradual resumption of the issuance of travel documents for tourism from mainland China to Macau, more travellers from mainland China will benefit from the festival's various offers, while the initiative should contribute to stimulate more visitors to visit and consume in Macau," the DST said.
Macau, which last year received almost 40 million visitors, has never recorded any cases of community transmission of the new coronavirus that causes Covid-19. It recently began lifting some border restrictions with mainland China, maintaining Beijing's policy of banning foreign visitors for the time being.
The issuing of tourist visas for Macau is seen as an essential measure to revitalise the economy in what is the gambling capital of the world, which has suffered an unprecedented drop of around 90% in both casino turnover and visitor numbers due to the pandemic.
