Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Algarve tourism bureau to run UK ad campaign insisting region is safe

Lisbon, Aug. 13, 2020 (Lusa) - The Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) is to seek to press home in the UK the message that Portugal's southernmost region is a safe place to visit, with an advertising campaign to be broadcast on Channel 5 television station.
"From 20th August until the end of October, this UK-based entertainment channel will broadcast a 50-second promotional video of the Algarve, which will be shown around 38 times a week and will result in ... 175,000 weekly views," the ATA said in a news release.
The aim, it stresses, is to add the pressure for the UK authorities to lift the restrictions on travellers arriving in the UK from Portugal due to the Covid-19 pandemic - who currently must spend 14 days in quarantine.
"We're strongly committed to reversing the negative effects that have resulted from the British government's decision - and this means, among other things, reinforcing and repeating the message to that market that the Algarve is a safe destination and that it's fully prepared to welcome its tourists again with all the quality and well-being to which they've always been accustomed," the release quotes the ATA president, João Fernandes, as saying.
He believes that the campaign "will have a significant impact" and that the UK "will change its decision very soon" and the Algarve will regain its most important market.
"As well as promoting the Algarve's fame as a safe destination, the exhibition of this video will also have a competition aspect, which will allow spectators to take part in a raffle and win a seven-night stay in the region for two people, in a five-star hotel," the statement reads. "This prize will be valid until the end of the summer of 2021."
On 24 July, the UK left Portugal off its list of countries covered by 'air corridors' to which residents may travel without having to spend 14 days in quarantine on their return. That confirmed the restriction it had first imposed at the start of the month.
Portugal has had 53,223 confirmed infections and 1,764 deaths associated with Covid-19, according to Wednesday's bulletin from the Directorate-General of Health.
Worldwide, the pandemic has so far claimed more than 743,000 lives and infected more than 20.3 million people in 196 countries and territories.
