Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Cashew exporters see 'difficult year' due to impact of pandemic

Bissau, Aug.11,2020 (Lusa) - The president of the Guinea-Bissau Association of Exporters, Mamadu Djamanca, on Tuesday predicted "a difficult year" for the harvest and marketing of cashews, the country's main agricultural product, due to the problems resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
He explained that the whole process started late this year and said that this would be reflected in the final results.
When the government began the process in May, he noted, "farmers were in lockdown" so could not immediately start harvesting the cashew nuts, which resulted in volumes being lower.
At present, he said, around 75,000 tons of cashew is currently being exported, while 90,000 tons is waiting in warehouses in the interior of Guinea-Bissau to be transported to Bissau. At this time last year, the country had already exported about 100,000 tons.
Djamanca also said that although the government had set aside €22.9 million to help finance this year's cashew harvest and sale, the strategy has not been implemented well enough to benefit stakeholders in the sector.
The association does not agree with conditions imposed by the commercial banks to which the government has handed over the management of the funds, contrasting this with the direct support that Cabo Verde and Portugal have given to economic agents to help them cope with the problems caused by the pandemic.
"In Cabo Verde even the 'bideiras' [street traders] received support from the state so that they would not be left with nothing," he said. "Portugal made an extraordinary gesture towards small and medium-sized enterprises; unfortunately in Guinea-Bissau zero: we're left to our own devices."
This year, he said, there is no way that the country will be able to export the 200,000 tons of cashew that is the normal minimum.
Guinea Bissau has so far had over 2,000 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus that causes Covid-19, and 29 people hae died.
When the first cases were detected in the country in March, the president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, closed the country's borders and decreed a state of emergency, which has been extended several times, most recently until 24 August.
