CNA - Increased measures against COVID-19 reinstated, with emphasis on Limassol
CNA -Nicosia- Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou announced increased measures for the protection of the population against COVID-19 on Friday, with emphasis on the town and district of Limassol.
Specifically, as of midnight local time, the general public is obliged to wear a mask in indoor crowded places, such as malls, banks, supermarkets, hospitals, and churches, with the fine for not complying being set at €300.
Furthermore, random tests at the airports are increased from 600 to 1,000 a day, with emphasis on Cypriots returning from holidays, as it appears that a large percentage of the cases is Cypriots with a travel history.
The strict adherence to visiting hours is recommended for private and public hospitals and nursing homes, and visits should be as short as possible.
The Police will be intensifying checks on people who are obliged to remain under self-isolation when travelling from Category C countries or when they are close contacts of cases. Checks will be daily.
Checks and surveillance will be intensified for businesses, restaurants and other establishments with zero-tolerance orders from the authorities.
After recent developments, Limassol-specific measures have been announced. The maximum number of persons in social gatherings is 10. For restaurants, it is 75 persons indoors and 150 outside maximum, irrespective of square metres. For churches, it is based on the square metres according to the protocol, with a maximum of 75 persons. Furthermore, there is a restriction on public transport, with 50% of their passenger capacity allowed. The measures in Limassol will last for three weeks and the situation will be reassessed.
The Health Minister did not rule out stricter measures in Limassol and other districts, depending on the epidemiological data.
Ioannou pointed out that everyone was obliged to be more diligent in personal protection issues, more careful in movements, more wary regarding the disease, and contact their GP if any symptoms appear.
He noted that over the past few days, persons who had symptoms did not contact their GP and consequently spread the virus.
“The virus will be with us for a while and we must learn to live with it. It will affect our daily lives,” he said.
Ioannou said that the way things are going, the reopening of certain businesses and sectors or the lifting of all restrictions will not happen in the near future.
He said the strategy so far has been successful due to the political will to take measures and due to the discipline demonstrated by the citizens, adding that the government was once again calling on the citizens to cooperate because “we are at a very crucial point regarding the pandemic.”
“Complacency is our worst enemy at this point. Recent developments have indicated that there are asymptomatic carriers of the virus among us who do not comply with the protective measures and unwittingly spread the virus, making it difficult to contain it,” he pointed out.
Replying to questions regarding the list of persons who should self-isolate, Ioannou said it would be in the possession of the Police for checks. He also said citizens who know persons who should self-isolate to report them.
Asked about the use of masks, he said it was not obligatory to wear surgical masks and that washable fabric ones could be used, adding that masks were mandatory for persons over six years of age.
Regarding the hospitals, Ioannou said they were ready to respond.
