Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Deficit upward revision 'shows brutal crisis' - President

Coimbra, Portugal, July 10, 2020 (Lusa) - The President of Portugal said on Friday in Coimbra that the upward revision of the public deficit to 7% "reflects the brutal crisis" that the country has begun to experience in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This deficit "reflects well the brutal crisis that we have already started to experience and that we are going to experience", said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was commenting on the ministry of finance's announcement on Thursday to revise the estimated public deficit upwards to around 7%.

The president said the prolongation of the pandemic "implies health and social expenses", and the increase in the deficit follows "external forecasts".

"The [international] forecasts tell us that the economic and financial evolution in the second half of this year is worse than what was thought", Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed, recalling that the Banco de Portugal even made forecasts "below 6%".

According to De Sousa, when there is such a deep fall in GDP (Gross Domestic Product), motivated by the fall in economic activity, "this means that revenue decreases", at the same time as spending related to the fight against the pandemic increases.

The president spoke to journalists before a visit to the Association of Economic Kitchens Rainha Santa Isabel (ACERSI), in downtown Coimbra.
