Lusa - Business News - Angola: Over 5,700 citizens returned including 2,158 from Portugal

Luanda, July 10, 2020 (Lusa) - The Angolan government said that 5,771 Angolan citizens have returned to the country since the closing of borders, including 2,158 from Portugal, with 49 cases of Covid-19 identified.

The information was released on Thursday by the minister of state and head of the Security House of the president and coordinator of the multi-sector commission to prevent and combat Covid-19, Pedro Sebastião.

According to him, among the 5,771 citizens who returned to the country, 2,158 came from Portugal, 1,470 from South Africa and 512 from Brazil and the rest from other origins (Cuba, Russia, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India, Turkey, Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo).

Except for flights on March 17 and 18, all of them were institutionally quarantined in public quarantine centres, Calumbo 1 and 2, and in hotels previously selected by the commission and were tested, with 49 imported cases identified.

Of these, 54% came from Russia, 37% from Portugal and 9% from other countries (France, Spain, Belarus, Cuba, etc.).

"Today 445 citizens have arrived from South Africa and all this effort requires very strong logistics. Only after they have left their quarantine sites, will we go on to the next phase, which will possibly be Portugal and Brazil," Sebastião said.

"We know the great difficulties that are going on in these countries, we are not unaware of them, the money that has run out, etc. We have been trying to help, here and there, to less good situations that can create difficulties for our citizens," he said, adding that the priority has been the countries where there are the largest communities of Angolans who have not yet been able to return to their country due to the closing of borders.

According to Sebastião, the most serious case now is undoubtedly Portugal because of the large number of Angolans there (around 7,000 citizens), but also Brazil which also has a considerable number and South Africa.

As for the costs of the flights made by TAAG, the Angolan carrier, they are not accounted for.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 549,000 deaths and infected more than 12 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,644 people have died out of 45,277 confirmed to be infected, according to the most recent bulletin of the Directorate-General of Health.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (3,071 cases and 51 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,790 cases and 25 deaths), Cabo Verde (1,553 cases and 19 deaths), Mozambique (1,092 cases and nine deaths), Sao Tome and Principe (724 cases and 13 deaths) and Angola (396 infected and 22 deaths).

Brazil is the Portuguese-language country most affected by the pandemic and one of the most affected in the world, accounting for the second number of infected and dead (more than 1.71 million cases and 67,964 deaths), after the United States.
