Lusa - Business News - Angola: Government spends €26M on new kwanza banknotes

Luanda,July 7,2020(Lusa)-Angola has spent around $30 million (€26 million) on the new "Series 2020" kwanza notes, which will come into circulation as of 30 July, carried out by two European and one US company.

According to the deputy governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), Tiago Dias, the process of producing the five new kwanza notes, the Angolan currency, involved internationally renowned companies that took part in a transparent public tender.

The official, who was speaking on Tuesday to journalists in Luanda at the end of the ceremony to launch the new family of kwanza notes, said that a US company, a German company and a Russian company won the tender.

The new kwanza notes, whose figure of prominence is the first Angolan president, Agostinho Neto, enter circulation gradually from 30 July.

The "2020 Series" includes 200 kwanzas (€0.30), 500 kwanzas (€0.75), 1,000 kwanzas (€1.5), 2,000 kwanzas (€3) and 5,000 kwanzas (€7.5) made of a polymer material (plastic) and with innovative security features.

The Angolan central bank's deputy governor said the new banknotes with a polymer substrate will last four times longer, mainly based on the experience gathered in other countries.

Asked about the implications of the new kwanza, without the face of José Eduardo dos Santos, in the context of the currency's devaluation, he said that the issue of the kwanza's depreciation does not apply in this area.

Tiago Dias clarified that the BNA decided not to include the denomination of 10,000 kwanzas (€15) in the 2020 series because for the time being there are no reasons why it should be put into circulation.

It is a common feature on the reverse side of all banknotes the insignia of the Republic, the geographical and cultural diversity of Angola, as well as a micro text with the full letter of the National Anthem of Angola "Angola Avante".

The new family of kwanza notes will simultaneously circulate with the banknotes of the 2012 series until the BNA understands that conditions are met to end their legal course.
