Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Government postpones restart of domestic flights for two weeks

Praia,June 29,2020(Lusa)-The Cape Verdean government announced on Monday the postponement to July 15 of the resumption of domestic air links, scheduled for this Tuesday, due to the epidemiological evolution of Covid-19 in the archipelago.
In a note from the government, to which Lusa had access, it is stated that the decision was due to "the increase of new cases of infection by the new coronavirus in the country" and comes after the resumption of international air links to the archipelago, scheduled for July, which last week was postponed to August.
Cabo Verde has recorded an accumulated 1,165 cases of Covid-19 since 19 March, with 12 deaths, but in the last three days alone it has counted 138 new infections. In the global registry, there are still 608 recovered, and of the nine inhabited islands of the archipelago, only Fogo and Brava have so far not diagnosed cases of the disease.
The plan for deconfinement, which started gradually at the beginning of this month after two months of a state of emergency differentiated by islands, foresaw the resumption of domestic air links on June 30, with a flight between Praia and São Filipe. Since March 29, there have been no regular commercial flights between the islands of Cape Verde.
Transportes Interilhas de Cabo Verde (TICV) planned to carry out 34 weekly flights in July, according to a statement to Lusa by the company's general manager (ex-Binter), Luís Quinta.
"We expect to increase gradually in August, assuming that in this time they will open international connections, where a greater flow of passengers is expected," added the head of the company, the only one operating domestic air connections in the archipelago, on TICV's forecasts a week ago.
According to Luís Quinta, in the same period of 2019, TICV (ex-Binter CV) carried out 120 (July) to 182 flights (August).
For the resumption of flights, the company has implemented "new health measures", guaranteeing "a safe, practical and sanitary operation".
These changes, explained Luís Quinta, are identical to the "international measures recommended" by the sector's international agencies, IATA and ICAO, and were approved by the Cabo Verde Civil Aviation Agency.
TICV has invested €13 million in Cape Verdean air connections over the last five years, employing 140 people.
In the high season, the company operated up to 28 daily flights between the Cape Verdean islands and in 2019 reached one million passengers carried in Cape Verde.
Prior to the suspension, passenger air connections to seven islands in the archipelago were guaranteed by TICV with nine routes operated by three ATR-72 500, with capacity for 72 passengers.
