Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Most rush hour commuter trains into Lisbon run at below 50% capacity - minister

Lisbon,June 29,2020(Lusa)-The minister of infrastructure and housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, said on Monday that the capacity of most commuter trains running during peak hours in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) is "below 50%" and "objective data do not show responsibilities of public transport in the propagation of Covid-19".
"Even if some images may convey the idea that we have overcrowded trains, the truth is that the capacity of the trains is much lower than 1/3 on average, with few trains close to 2/3. We don't exclude the possibility that there may occasionally be a train where there are 2/3 or even above, but that's not the reality of trains in the AML and, therefore, we will fail to respond to the problem if we are looking at the wrong place," he said.
For the minister who heads the train operator Comboios de Portugal (CP), it is important to have objective data to address the responsibility of public transport in the propagation of Covid-19, including the effective capacity and number of infected workers.
"We need to work with the reality of the facts and the truth is that, at the moment, we have an overwhelming majority of our trains in peak hours in the AML below 50%, or even 30%", reinforced Pedro Nuno Santos, revealing that, in 662 trains that circulate in the AML per day, "only half a dozen are around 2/3", so there is no problem of overcrowding at the moment.
Regarding the number of infected workers, the minister said that of the 2,000 people who work daily inside the trains, namely CP inspectors, there are three cases of infection from Covid-19.
"The people who would be most at risk are those who work daily in the trains, they did not have an above average risk, on the contrary, of covid transmission", stressed the governor, trying to demistify the tendency to look at public transport as responsible for the spread of the virus.
In order to guarantee the minimum conditions to significantly reduce the risk of contagion in public transport, the government determined the mandatory use of a mask, the Minister of Infrastructure recalled, praising the effort to sanitize the trains as the possible response in the short term "in relation to the infrastructure network, which has limitations, which prevent more trains from being added".
