Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: First mineral water plant to open in mid-July

Sao Tome, June 29,2020 (Lusa)-The first mineral water factory in Sao Tome and Principe, called Águas de Bom Sucesso, will be inaugurated in mid-July, following a Libyan investment, the amount of which was not announced, the company's source told Lusa on Monday.

"We are waiting for an engineer from Turkey to arrive in the country to make the certification and put the machines into operation," said the factory's supervisor, Américo Ceita.

The Aguas de Bom Sucesso factory is located about 20 kilometres from the capital, an investment that began in 2009 under the government of former Prime Minister Rafael Branco and has a capacity to produce 12,000 litres of mineral water per day, to supply the local market and export to Central African countries.

The project is by Libyan businessmen who initially had the support of the government of former President Muammar Gaddafi, whose death led to the suspension of the works.

The government of former Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada had put the factory out to public tender, a measure contested by the entrepreneurs.

The works were still suspended for some years, and the executive of Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus threatened to sell the factory if the investors did not conclude the works.

Jorge Bom Jesus visited the Aguas de Bom Sucesso facilities at the weekend and concluded that the mineral water factory "has all the conditions to go into operation.

"The state needs to encourage the private sector, that is why we are here putting a little more pressure on the progress of these works," the prime minister said, underlining that he "would like to inaugurate" the mineral water factory during "the 12 July holiday," when the country's independence is celebrated.

The chief executive said he was "pleasantly surprised," but acknowledged that it was "a white-haired project.

"This project has had several vicissitudes, lately we had to put a lot of pressure, even to the point of threatening the company that we would end it all," the prime minister explained adding that the businessmen "had an ultimatum in February, they corresponded and the work is 99% finished.

Soon we will be able to drink our country's water and not continue filling ships with water containers," Jorge Bom Jesus added.
