Brussels, June 4, 2020 (Lusa) – The European Commission said that any restrictions adopted by member states on the entry of other EU citizens into their territories are "unacceptable" and "discriminatory", adding that it will intervene if this happens.
"If this is happening, we will have to examine what can be done, the European Social Rights Commissioner Nicolas Schmit said, "Discriminatory situations are clear and in principle not acceptable."
Asked by Lusa about announcements already made by some member states regarding the selective reopening of borders after the control of the Covid-19 pandemic - as was the case with Greece, which said it would not allow travel from Portugal - he said he had not yet been formally informed of any restrictions.
However, he noted that any kind of discrimination against European citizens in this format is unacceptable.
He told Lusa that rules are one thing but discriminating against people based on their nationality is unacceptable.
Last Friday, Greece released a list of 29 countries from which it will accept direct flights from 15 June, with the list to be expanded on 1 July to resume tourism.
However, for the time being, the list does not include member states such as Portugal or Italy, but rather gives the 'green light' to travellers from countries such as China, Australia, South Korea, among others.
This Monday, Italy warned that despite the reopening of its international borders this week, it will keep them closed to countries that impose entry restrictions on Italian citizens, due to the principle of reciprocity.
Between untimely closures and case by case reopening, the 27 EU countries have not yet coordinated in managing border openings.
In mid-May, following the suspension of national and intra-EU travel for more than two months to try to contain Covid-19, the European Commission proposed to member states criteria for the gradual reopening of the EU's internal borders, stressing that the principle of non-discrimination must be respected.
With the pandemic stabilising in Europe, Brussels considers the resumption of free movement and cross-border travel to be key to tourism and has therefore advised countries to replace general restrictions on free movement with more specific and targeted measures as they manage to contain the new coronavirus.
