Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: PM announces easing of lockdown measures, flights from June 30

Praia,May 29,2020(Lusa)-Cabo Verde's prime minister announced on Friday a plan to lift the ban on air links from June 30 and to hold cultural and sporting events after October 31.
In a message to the country from the city of Praia, the head of government, Ulisses Correia e Silva, highlighted the fact that the country's last island, Santiago, will end its two-month state of emergency at the end of today and the country can move on to the next phase in the fight against the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.
"Result of the good fight developed so far to contain the spread of Covid-19. The end of the state of emergency does not mean the end of the virus. It represents more freedom, but at the same time more responsibility", said Ulisses Correia e Silva, after the President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, announced on Thursday that he will not extend the state of emergency in Santiago, the only one with active cases of Covid-19, so it ends at 23:59 today.
As a way to counter the pandemic, the government declared a state of calamity on March 26 and three days later the state of emergency was declared. All inter-island passenger connections were suspended - sea connections were resumed on the seven islands without Covid-19 cases on 11 May - and on 19 March all international flights were banned.
"Air connections will be resumed from 30 June, including Santiago," announced the head of government in today's message.
He added that the decision is part of the government's approved plan for de-confinement, "which raises restrictions imposed by the state of calamity, in a programmed manner". From the restaurant level, until now with limited opening hours until 9:00 p.m., which ceases to happen from June 1 "throughout the national territory".
The maritime connections to the island of Boa Vista, which only this month stopped having active cases of Covid-19, after an accumulation of 56 diagnosed since March 19, will be resumed on June 1, while the connections to Santiago will only resume on June 30.
"The island of Santiago, and particularly the city of Praia, continues with the occurrence of positive cases of Covid-19. For this reason, some restrictions remain in force, such as the ban on air and sea transport for passengers to and from Santiago, the ban on the frequency of and access to bathing beaches, and the ban on the operation of bars," announced Ulisses Correia e Silva.
He said that cultural and sporting events, such as festivals, parties and sports events, will only be resumed in Cape Verde "from October 31.
Despite the end of the state of emergency, the Prime Minister assured that some protection measures, such as the use of masks and regular cleaning and disinfection operations, will remain mandatory.
Cape Verde has registered 390 accumulated cases of Covid-19, since March 19, distributed throughout the islands of Santiago (331), Boa Vista (56) and São Vicente (03). However, since Tuesday, no tests have been performed on samples collected by health authorities due to a problem with reagents in the country's Virology Laboratory.
Of the total, there were four deaths, two patients transferred to their countries and 155 patients recovered, giving the country 229 active cases at the moment.
