Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Number of ships calling at ports down 50% in April

Praia,May 22,2020(Lusa)-The movement of ships in Cape Verdean ports halved in April to 313 calls, due to the limitations imposed by the government to stop the spread of Covid-19, according to data from the company Enapor consulted on Friday by Lusa.
With the declaration of a state of emergency in Cabo Verde, which came into effect on 29 March and lasted practically all of April, air and sea connections between the archipelago's nine inhabited islands were suspended to halt the Covid-19 pandemic.
This ban, according to the government's determination, only had exceptions in the transportation of cargo between islands, for sanitary and civil protection purposes, medical evacuations or transportation of technicians assigned to services considered essential.
According to data from Enapor, the Cape Verdean public company responsible for managing the islands' ports, only 313 calls of ships were registered in April, a drop of 51.5% compared to March and a drop of 49.7% compared to the same month in 2019.
Despite the general suspension of transport, Enapor registered 629 passengers transported (embarking and disembarking) in April, under the conditions foreseen by the state of emergency. This is a drop of more than 99% compared to March and in the same dimension compared to April 2019.
The maritime passenger connections, provided by CV Interilhas, a company 51% owned by the Portuguese company Transinsular, only began to be gradually resumed on 11 May, involving only the seven islands without active cases of Covid-19. The island of Boa Vista, which since Thursday also has no active cases of Covid-19, and the island of Santiago, with about 250 cases, still have no maritime passenger connections.
The traffic of goods by sea, between the islands of Cabo Verde in April, totalled 161,700 tonnes, a drop of 33.2% compared to 2019 and 18.6% compared to the previous month.
Cabo Verde has recorded an accumulated 356 cases of Covid-19 since 19 March, three deaths and 95 recovered patients.
The 256 cases still active are limited to the island of Santiago (essentially in the city of Praia), the only island that remains, at least until midnight on 29 May, in a state of emergency, to contain the transmission.
