Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Three in every five companies had no teleworking policy

Lisbon, May 22,2020(Lusa)-Three out of five companies in Portugal did not have a remote working policy when the pandemic forced 70% of employees into this system, but in 45% of cases, the workload even increased, a study released on Friday showed.

According to the results of a study on 'remote work' carried out by Deloitte with "more than 30 top executives from the 250 largest companies in Portugal", among the 45% of respondents who consider that their workload has increased, "most also perceive an increase in the responsiveness of their management, with an implicit increase in the level of productivity in a remote context".

"In view of the situation we are experiencing, it is critical that organisations reflect on their way of operating, breaking some of the preconceived myths about more flexible ways of operating, and accelerating the transition to the 'Future of Work'," the consultant said.

Asked about the main factors that positively influenced productivity and responsiveness, 94% of respondents at the Deloitte 'Remote Work Snapshot' pointed to 'applications supporting remote work', followed by 'guidance given on work management' (84%) and 'leaders' posture' (77%).

With regard to the values that gain more prominence in the culture of organisations to support new work dynamics, on a scale of 1 to 4 points (where 1 means 'not important' and 4 is 'indispensable'), the 'commitment' emerges at the top with an average of 3.53 points, followed by 'accountability' (3.50 points) and 'agility and confidence' (3.47 points).

Regarding the way in which the usual dynamics of work have adapted to the new forms of remote teamwork in order to ensure the effectiveness of the work carried out, 57% of the managers surveyed consider that the number of daily meetings has increased in the current context, of which 53% believe there has been a decrease in individual productivity.

According to Deloitte, "the increase in the number of meetings is associated with a greater need for control, revealing the need to adjust the culture and empower leaders to operate in a more agile and flexible context.

The survey also shows that, although 40% of those surveyed revealed that the staff hiring planned in their company for this period were carried out remotely, 30% said that the recruitment processes were eventually suspended.

As the consultant notes, the current context created by the health crisis has also "opened space" for "reinventing traditional training practices", with 30% of face-to-face training already being replaced by 'online' training.

The study also revealed that 53% of respondents say social support measures will be made available to their employees and 81% claim that monetary support measures will be implemented.

The data obtained from the more than 30 executives surveyed, who work in the banking, insurance, retail and telecommunications sectors, among others, was collected through an online survey that ran until April 20.

The objective of the work was to analyse "how organisations responded to the challenges imposed by the state of emergency, characterised by social confinement and the obligation to work remotely", and "the impacts of this extraordinary situation on employee productivity and its impact on the recruitment, reception and training programmes of organisations".

Worldwide, according to an assessment by the AFP news agency, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused almost 330,000 deaths and infected more than five million people in 196 countries and territories.

In Portugal, 1,277 people have died out of 29,912 confirmed as infected, and there are 6,452 recovered cases, according to the health authorities (DGS).

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the centre of the pandemic in February, the American continent has the most confirmed cases (almost 2.3 million compared to nearly two million in Europe), although with fewer deaths (about 135,000 compared to more than 170,000).

To fight the pandemic, governments sent 4.5 billion people (more than half the planet's population) home, paralyzing entire sectors of the world economy, in "great confinement" that several countries have already begun to alleviate as new contagions decrease.
