Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Algarve campsites start opening for uncertain summer

Faro, Portugal, May 22,2020 (Lusa)-Campsites in the Algarve began to open this week to the public, with the care required by safety regulations to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, but aware that this is likely to be a weaker summer.

The three Orbitur campsites in the region have been operating since 20 May, but the 15 belonging to the Association of Camping Sites of the Alentejo and Algarve (APCAA) will only open on Monday.

"We have been contacted by many clients who want to understand what measures are being taken and, after the explanation, show confidence and confirm the reservation," the campsite manager at Valverde (Orbitur) in Praia da Luz, told Lusa.

The first clients after the reopening have already arrived and are expected more by the weekend, which leaves Teresa Neto optimistic about next summer, although she knows that the occupation will be far from last year's numbers.

Considering that people need to leave home, the manager expects greater demand from the Portuguese, even though she can only offer two-thirds of the total occupation of the park.

During the state of emergency, there were cancellations of reservations for May and June, but many remain for July and August, said Teresa Neto, adding that the new bookings she has received for next month are both from foreigners and Portuguese.

The size of the park allows the spacing between people, which is a great advantage, and adherence to the 'Safe & Clean' seal gives guarantees at the level of cleaning and sanitation of the locker rooms, after each use, she said.

Only the common room, the playground, the swimming pool, and the restaurant are still closed, waiting for the outline of the measures to be adopted so they can be opened safely.

The Association of Camping Sites of Alentejo and Algarve (APCAA) points to 25 May for the opening of the parks with all the safety guarantees required and with a reduction in the area available, since it expects an influx below normal in the month of June.

The association's leader stressed that they are asking members to adhere to the 'Clean & Safe' seal and those who do not to follow the contingency plans created before the campsite closes.

For Joaquim Lourenço, caravanning outside legal spaces deserves special attention from the authorities, pointing out that only in this way can there be more foreign clients in June.

The leader pointed out that the information for the opening on 18 May only arrived last weekend and the existence of workers on temporary layoff implies a legal obligation to restart the activity within a period of eight days to maintain some of the workers in this regime since the capacity will have to be reduced by a third.
