Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Venezuela's resilient Portuguese traders face new Covid-19 challenges

Caracas, Apr. 8, 2020 (Lusa) - The coronavirus has brought new challenges to Venezuela's many Portuguese traders, who are already used to water, electricity and fuel shortages and are now spending more time with their families, taking more care with their hygiene and buying more essential goods.
"We are trying to survive," António da Silva, 58, explained to Lusa. "We don't know when this will end. Trying to keep ourselves safe [when] our way of life has changed in the past month."
Da Silva, a native of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira, has been living in Caracas for 42 years, where he is a partner at Supermercado Maturín.
"We work when we can, we open when we can and people are also buying what they can," he said, acknowledging that many items have gone up in price.
"We know what inflation is like in Venezuela: today it is at one price and tomorrow it is at another," he said, reporting that with the lockdown because of Covid-19, people are buying more "flour, pasta, oil - all kinds of basic products," but also "alcohol and vinegar to help" protect themselves from the coronavirus.
Getting to the supermarket each day "is not easy" because people's movements are restricted.
"We have the problem that there is no petrol, that we cannot leave at the time we want and we have to return earlier," he said. "We're open until four o'clock in the afternoon, because from five o'clock on we can't be driving anymore."
Da Silva watches the news every day and knows that "the pandemic isn't only affecting Portugal, or Venezuela, but all the countries in the world" and has caused a lot of uncertainty among traders. He believes it may be two or three months before the situation improves.
"Let everyone stay at home, let them wear masks," he said. "I only go out because I have to open my business, which is food."
By contrast, Jaime Graterol, a customer at the supermarket who is himself a trader, thinks that people should adapt.
"It's not that I want things to change or not," he said. "Everything has changed, including prices, and that is normal, because there is no petrol."
At the supermarket he bought "tuna and canned sardines, juices, the basics". He said that his establishment is "stocked, it has fruit, everything, what you need is to have the money to be able to pay for it."
He agrees that "everyone should take care of themselves ... stay at home, protect themselves". He also suggests that they "wash their hands, change their clothes when their get home," adding: "Let's take care of each other."
The pandemic has also changed the life of Claudia Kisene, a speech therapist, who has been left without patients and work.
"I teach children to speak better," she said, explaining: "I have to touch them, so they do exercises, and I can't do that over the internet."
For her, "the first change was work, the second family dynamics - being with the kids at home and planning routines so that it's easier for them not to be at school - and the third is that I only shop once a week." That, she explains, is "to protect us and go out as little as possible, three or four of each product."
She does not see food supplies in general as having changed; what is in short supply "are fruit and vegetables, because they come from the interior [of the country] and sometimes access to the city is blocked or there is no petrol."
Kisene likes to buy from this Portuguese-owned supermarket because it stocks what she looks for most, and because "it's kept prices the same" that "have gone up a lot elsewhere".
Several shopkeepers are using Instagram to offer combinations of products at affordable prices that people can buy without leaving home.
"Delivery [business] will cause price competition and people will spend where their money is worth most," she argues. In conclusion, she recommends that people stay calm and have faith because "God is allowing us to meet again with ourselves, with our family - also so we get closer to God."
In Venezuela, official figures show 165 infections with the new coronavirus in the country, with seven deaths, but the data has been challenged by independent analysts.
The new coronavirus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic has already infected about 1.4 million people worldwide, of whom more than 80,000 have died. Of the cases of infection, some 260,000 are considered cured.
