Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Farmers with 'serious problem' to sell produce, want markets reopened

Lisbon, Apr.1,2020 (Lusa) – The Confederation of Agriculture (CNA) on Wednesday pointed out the existence of a "very serious problem" of sales of small and medium farmers' production, resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, calling for the reopening of local markets.
"There is a very serious problem of sales of production for many small and medium farmers [...]. The situation is already dramatic for many and it will be ruinous for most small and medium farmers if measures are not taken immediately to enable these families, who have no other income, to make a living from working in the countryside," the CNA said in a statement.
According to the confederation, this situation has been boosted by the closure of restaurants, local markets, fairs and events, eliminating the outlets for "many thousands of family farmers". On the other hand, CNA said that sheep and goat producers are having "serious difficulties in selling their products," in addition to the decrease in the price of products, for example, 33 cents in the last week in the case of chicken. Traditional olive oil producers are also experiencing difficulties in selling their products, as are the flower and vegetable sectors, which are already experiencing sharp falls.
"The problems are many and need urgent answers. The measures announced [by the government], which are generally positive, are very insufficient and above all fail to reach small and medium-sized farmers", he stressed. To deal with this situation, the CNA advocated reopening local markets, "with strict sanitary rules", combating speculation, creating a programme to buy local products for public canteens and a measure to withdraw producers from the sectors with the greatest difficulties in marketing.
In addition, the CNA wants the sale of fruit and vegetables to be allowed at the farmer's door, on the farm and by the roadside, a measure created to support the loss of income of small and medium farmers and allow farmers to move around during the state of emergency.
As claimed by the CNA, it is also necessary to bring forward the payment of all direct aid, agri-environmental measures and support for less-favoured areas to July and with a percentage of no less than 80%, as well as to guarantee small farmers' organisations access to measures to support the cash flow of enterprises, the restoration of green electricity with reimbursement of up to 50% "of the value of the consumption of the electric downshifts in agriculture and agro-industry", as well as the reduction in the price of coloured and marked diesel.
"The application of these measures, and others that become necessary, are essential to avoid the closure of thousands of small and medium-sized farms and avoid that at the end of this crisis food production is even more concentrated and dependent on other countries, contributing decisively to the ruin of vast areas of our rural world," considered the management of CNA.
