Lusa - Business News - Portugal: "Resolute" case in Venezuela not incident between states - minister
Lisbon, Apr.1,2020 (Lusa)-Portugal's foreign minister, Augusto Santos Silva, told Lusa on Wednesday that there is a willingness to investigate the incident between a ship flying the Portuguese flag and a Venezuelan Navy motorboat rejecting it as an interstate incident. "The incident involving a private ship under the Portuguese flag and a Venezuelan Navy motorboat is not an incident between states and what states should do are collaborate so that the truth can be ascertained. For the Portuguese state there is every willingness for this collaboration," the minister said. The Venezuelan Ministry of Defence on Tuesday said that a Venezuelan Navy ship sank on Monday after a collision with the Portuguese flagged cruise ship "Resolute", north of the island of La Tortuga, located 181 kilometres northeast of Caracas. According to the ministry, at 12.45 a.m. on Monday (5.45 a.m. in Lisbon), the Coast Guard boat "Naiguatá GC-23" was carrying out maritime patrol tasks in the Venezuelan territorial sea, when it was hit by the passenger ship 'Resolute' (122 meters long and 8,300 tonnes of displacement), flying the Portuguese flag. The collision occurred when the Navy vessel was carrying out a maritime traffic control procedure, which caused significant damage to the Venezuelan Coast Guard ship, the statement explains. Meanwhile, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Lisbon embassy in Caracas of the event, through a verbal note. "We will respond as briefly as possible to the Venezuelan note. This incident, whatever its nature, is an incident that should not disturb the relations from state to state, between Venezuela and Portugal, let alone a private ship and an isolated incident whose responsibilities can and should be investigated," Augusto Santos Silva said. However, on Tuesday Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the Portuguese flag cruise ship "Resolute" of having carried out an act of terrorism and piracy against the Venezuelan Navy ship. Niclás Maduro urged the authorities of Curaçao, Dutch territory, where the ship is currently anchored, to investigate this act of international piracy. "Let us see what we can find out in the investigation because the moment is not to add words to words. The moment is to establish the facts. I insist that for the simple fact that the incident has occurred is in all respects regrettable," Augusto Santos Silva said. According to the Augusto Santos Silva, Portugal will also ask for the cooperation of the Dutch authorities in Willemstad, Curaçao, where the ship is docked. PSP (FPG)/IMYN // ADB.
