Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Informal trade to feel 'immediate impact' from Covid-19 measures

Bissau, Apr. 1, 2020 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau economic analyst Santos Fernandes has told Lusa that informal trade in the African country will suffer an "immediate impact" from measures taken by the authorities to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus and that poverty is likely to increase as a result.
According to Santos Fernandes, the country's economy is "extremely informal", which "means that the agents who act informally" will suffer the "immediate impact" of the measures.
"Those agents are essentially women and young people who cannot have access to decent formal employment and are in precarious situations," he stressed, adding that they are usually the ones who support their families and "everyone will suffer the impact in the short term".
As a result, he said, the authorities must "create measures conducive, in terms of subsidies" to preventing the rise in poverty that should "be aggravated by the effects of Covid-19", adding that the informality of Guinea-Bissau's economy "is a reflection of our lack of economic structure".
In Guinea-Bissau, which is among the poorest countries in the world, the informal economy is dominated by women, who also represent the majority of the country's population and who in most families are responsible for ensuring daily subsistence.
As part of the fight against the pandemic, the authorities in power in Guinea-Bissau have declared a state of emergency, but before that they had already closed borders, schools, restaurants and other local businesses, as well as banning public transport. Basic necessities may also only be purchased between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.
On Sunday, the authorities confirmed eight confirmed cases of the new coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
The pandemic hit Guinea-Bissau at a time when the country is undergoing yet another political crisis, which began after December's second round of presidential elections.
In February Umaro Sissoco Embaló, an army general who the National Electoral Commission declared the winner in the vote, proclaimed himself president, even as the Supreme Court of Justice has yet to rule on an electoral litigation appeal lodged by his rival, Domingos Simões Pereira.
Embaló took office in a ceremony overseen by the deputy speaker of parliament, Nuno Nabian, who eventually stepped down from that position to take over as head of a new government appointed by the self-proclaimed president.
The government led by Nabian then occupied the ministries with the support of the country's military, but Embaló rejects the idea that a coup is underway in the country and says he is awaiting the Supreme Court's decision on the electoral appeal.
Following the inauguration of Emabaló and his government, Guinea-Bissau's main international partners have called for a resolution of the crisis based on the law and the country's constitution, underscoring the importance of the Supreme Court ruling on the electoral appeal.
The measures imposed by the authorities to combat the coronavirus have been criticised by several analysts as not taking account the precariousness of the country's economy and not being accompanied by measures to minimise their impact on ordinary people.
In Guinea-Bissau eight cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed.
The number of deaths in Africa from Covid-19 has risen to 173, with confirmed cases exceeding 5,000 in 48 countries, according to the latest statistics for the continent.
The new coronavirus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic has so far infected more than 828,000 people worldwide, of whom more than 41,000 have died. Of infected patients, at least 165,000 are considered to have been cured.
Since the outbreak began in China in December, it has spread worldwide, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic situation.
