Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon city council to step up implementation of €620M investment plan

Lisbon, Mar.25,2020 (Lusa)- Lisbon city council will speed up implementation of its investment plan for this year and subsequent years, worth around €620 million, the mayor announced on Wednesday.
This amount corresponds to tenders that are currently still being implemented by the city council and municipal companies, tenders that will be launched in the first half of this year and also those planned for the second half, explained Fernando Medina (PS).
"This is a way to strengthen the public service and a way to support employment and preserve productive capacity at a time when the city most needs it," said Medina, speaking to the press by videoconference to present the city's 15 measures to support families and economic activity in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The investment of €620 million includes the construction of health centres, continuous care units, crèches, schools, housing, green infrastructure, public space, sanitation system, mobility and tourism.
€140 million for schools, crèches, health centres and continuous care units, in progress or with a call for tender to be launched by the end of the year, while Housing totals an investment of €160 million.
€35 million are planned for the Environment area, €50 million for public space and €170 million for infrastructure and sanitation, "with emphasis on the General Drainage Plan".
€30 million for tourism and €35 million for mobility.
"The message that we want to make very clear here to all those involved is very simple: do not stop the economy, do not stop your activity", stressed Fernando Medina.
"As long as the general rules of society allow it - and allow it well - we want to take advantage of this cycle to accelerate our investment dynamics", he reinforced, arguing that this investment plan is aimed at "solving concrete problems for the city and for the Lisbon people who are very important".
The City Council will also "keep urban licensing in full operation" by telework, to be carried out by "more than 400 workers".
"This measure aims to support the entire chain of architects, planners, developers and builders, essential to the recovery of employment and the economy, and to adapt the city so that, in the recovery phase, the city council is truly an engine of the economy of the city of Lisbon", the mayor stressed.
The council will also set up a support team for small, micro and medium-sized businesses "with a view to providing information on all existing support, as well as consultancy, to mitigate the effects of the crisis and promote economic recovery".
The team, organised by the council and Startup Lisbon, will include specialists in the areas of banking, finance, consultancy and communication, among others.
The creation of a 'market place' that will allow "startups" to "continue to function through the development of technological solutions to current challenges" was another measure presented.
"We're living through a tough crisis, but we'll overcome it together, and we also have to look to the future. And to prepare for the future is to do our part. To support employment protection, to support the city's institutions, cultural institutions, recreational, sports, social institutions, the city's social fabric, so that at the moment of recovery we are all here, together, building the future of the city of Lisbon", concluded the mayor.
