Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: All hotels on island of Sal shut

Praia, Mar.25,2020 (Lusa)-All hotels on Sal, Cape Verde's most touristic island, are to suspend their activities because of the coronavirus, a trade union source told Lusa, adding that these were good measures to protect workers and businesses.

According to Kelly Ferreira, of the legal office of the Industry, Trade and Tourism Union (SICOTUR), several hotels have already closed their doors and are awaiting an official decision from the Meliá Group and Hotel Riu, the island's largest hotels.

Even with the temporary suspension of activities, this lawyer said that the hotels were guaranteeing jobs and 70% pay.

The measure, announced by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, allows the suspension of payment for social contribution and 70% of salary will be paid 50:50 by the National Institute of Social Security (INPS) and the employers.

"That ends up benefiting the workers because instead of 50% they'll receive 70% of the salary. It's an advantage," Kelly Ferreira noted, indicating that at least about 600 workers from other hotels are already at home.

In addition to those whose contracts have not been renewed, the union representative went on to say that they will also have unemployment benefits, still in line with the measures taken by the Extraordinary Social Concertation Council.

"We are following the situation. It is a different situation, which nobody expected and these are the best measures the companies had to take because there are no flights and no customers", said the lawyer, who is still waiting to see the consequences on people and the economy.

Kelly Ferreira told Lusa that all the hotel companies are reporting the suspension for four months, foreseeing a resumption of tourism activity on the island of Sal between July and August.

The Cape Verdean government said on Wednesday today that about 7,000 foreign tourists, clients of the tour operator TUI and who were on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, "are already back to their home countries," and the repatriation operation ended on Tuesday.

Sal, with almost 40,000 inhabitants, is the most touristic island of the Cape Verdean archipelago, as it was responsible for 45.5% of the 820,000 tourists who visited the country last year.

Cape Verde has so far registered four cases of Covid-19, one of which has been confirmed today, a Cape Verdean citizen who returned from France on a flight through Lisbon.
