Lusa - Business News - Cabo Verde: Nationals flown back home in past two days now in quarantine

Praia, Mar.25,2020 (Lusa)-More than 270 Cabo Verde nationals who were stranded in Portugal, the US and Brazil have returned home in the past two days and are being quarantined in hotels in the country, the government said in a statement on Wednesday.
Several repatriation operations had been carried out since Monday for Cabo Verde nationals who were stuck abroad due to flights being cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government said.
The statement adds that the Cabo Verde nationals who have returned in the last two days "immediately" began the quarantine imposed by the authorities "in hotels previously prepared according to health authorities' guidelines" in the capital, Praia and on the island of Sal.
In addition, according to the statement, around 7,000 foreign tourists, customers of tour operator TUI who had been on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista, "are already back in their countries of residence", with that operation having concluded on Tuesday.
"The Portuguese, Brazilians and Americans who were on several islands were also transported to their respective countries, on flights supported by the state of Cabo Verde, TAP flights or shared flights," the government said in its statement.
It adds that any cases of Cabo Verde nationals "who may still be stranded abroad [and need] help [to] return to the country" will be monitored if needed.
"In the same way, [the government] is paying attention to foreign nationals who may still be in the country," it concludes.
Dozens of Portuguese nationals are known to be waiting for flights back home on the islands of Santiago, Sal and São Vicente.
Cabo Verde, which suspended commercial international flights a week ago, has had three confirmed cases of Covid-19 on the island of Boa Vista, one of which patients died, along with another case on the island of Santiago.
The new coronavirus responsible for the covid-19 pandemic has so far infected more than 400,000 people around the world, of whom around 18,000 have died.
Africa has seen 58 deaths due to the new coronavirus, among 2,000 cases in 45 countries and territories, according to the latest statistics.
Several countries have adopted exceptional measures, including quarantine rules, a state of emergency and the closure of borders.
