Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Foreign affairs minister to explain position on TAP flight suspension

Lisbon, Feb. 27, 2020 (Lusa) - Foreign minister Augusto Santos Silva is to explain to the parliamentary committee Portugal's position on the Venezuelan authorities' decision to suspend TAP's operations to that country for 90 days.
The hearing, with a date yet to be set, was requested by the Democratic Socialist Party (PSD) parliamentary group and the MP representing the Chega party and unanimously approved on Thursday by the members of the Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities Committee.
The minister said on Wednesday, as he left another parliamentary hearing, that the matter is being resolved through diplomatic channels.
The Venezuelan government accused the Portuguese airline of violating international standards, by allegedly allowing the transport of explosive substances and for hiding the identity of the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, on a flight to Caracas, and decided to suspend TAP flights to Venezuela for 90 days.
"From the moment this decision was taken, Portugal activated diplomatic channels to achieve a goal that is to lift the suspension," the minister said on Wednesday.
"I cannot guarantee that it will be because this is a decision by the Venezuelan authorities, but I can guarantee that I will do everything - by the way, I am already doing it - with all diplomatic means at my disposal to have the suspension lifted," Santos Silva said.
The Internal Administration General Inspection (IGAI) published a report last week that TAP and the Lisbon airport did not violate security rules in the case of the flight to Venezuela.
According to the Venezuelan government headed by Nicolas Maduro, Guaidó's uncle Juan Marquez, who accompanied his nephew on that flight, carried tactical pocket torches that hid explosive chemicals in the battery compartment.
So Venezuelan authorities believe that TAP, on that flight between Lisbon and Caracas, violated international security standards, allowing explosives, and hid the identity of Venezuela's self-proclaimed interim President Juan Guaidó on the passenger list, although airport security is not the responsibility of the carriers.
