Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Health Department issues coronavirus guidelines to companies

Lisbon, Feb. 27, (Lusa) – The Department of Health (DGS) has issued recommendations to companies because of the coronavirus, advising them to establish contingency plans for suspicious cases among workers that include isolation zones and specific hygiene rules, avoiding meetings.
In the guidance published on the website, the DGS says that companies should be prepared for the possibility that some (or all) of their workers may not go to work due to illness, suspension of public transportation or school closures, and that they should evaluate essential activities in the company and essential resources to maintain them.
It also advises companies to use alternative forms of work such as teleworking, video meetings and teleconferences, as well as remote access for customers. To this end, companies should 'consider strengthening the technological infrastructure for communication and information', says the DGS.
To restrict direct contact with suspect cases that may arise, companies should create isolation areas with natural ventilation, or mechanical ventilation systems, and smooth, washable coverings, without carpets, rugs or curtains.
These areas should be equipped with a telephone, chair or couch, water and some non-perishable food, waste container (with non-manual opening and plastic bag), alcohol-based antiseptic solution, paper towels, surgical masks, disposable gloves and thermometer.
In or near this area, there must be a properly equipped toilet facility, including a soap dispenser and paper towels, for the exclusive use of the worker with the symptoms.
The company should include in its contingency plan basic procedures for hand hygiene (should be washed with soap and water and/or disinfected), rules for respiratory etiquette (avoid coughing or sneezing into the hands), for placing a surgical mask (including hand hygiene before placing and after removing the mask) and for social conduct that includes changes in the frequency and/or form of contact between workers and between workers and clients, avoiding handshakes, face-to-face meetings and shared work stations.
Contingency plans should also identify the health professionals to be contacted.
According to this DGS guideline, companies should also make available at strategic sites (meal areas) surgical masks for the use of the worker with symptoms and for use, as a precautionary measure, by workers assisting the suspect case/s, as well as paper towels for drying hands.
The authorities also recommend the planning of the cleaning of linings, equipment and utensils, as well as of objects and surfaces such as handrails, door handles and lift buttons.
The plans should also provide for surveillance procedures for contacts close to the suspected case, namely workers who are at the same workplace (office, room, section, area up to 2 meters) or who have been face-to-face with the confirmed case or who have been with him/her in an enclosed space.
Faced with a confirmed case of COVID-19, the DGS also says that surveillance procedures for close contacts (family and friends) should be activated.
According to this DGS guidance, the estimated incubation period of the new coronavirus is two to 12 days. As a precautionary measure, the authorities recommend active surveillance of close contacts for 14 days since the date of last confirmed case exposure.
