Lusa - Business News - Angola: Impact of coronavirus set to push economy deeper into recession - Fitch

Hong Kong, China, 17, Feb 2020 (Lusa) – The spread of the new coronavirus could worsen the recession already foreseen for this year in Angola due to the country’s strong trade links with China, according to a report by Fitch Solutions, an economic consultancy firm.
Major exporters of raw materials in sub-Saharan Africa are the countries that are expected to be hit hardest by the epidemic, as China is one of the main importers of oil and ores, but there is a large range of regional economies that are exposed to any slowdown in Chinese investment, write analysts in a note sent to investors that Lusa has seen.
They also warn that a review of their forecast of 2.3% economic growth in the region this year is likely to be revised downwards.
In the note, the Fitch analysts write that economies with weak health systems and macroeconomic frameworks are particularly at risk, with markets in southern Africa especially vulnerable to a worsening of economic sentiment.
Specifically on Angola, Fitch Solutions warns that the drop in crude oil production should already have an influence on the trade balance and economic growth in the coming quarters, and as the third largest supplier of oil to China, Angola is strongly exposed to downward risks in oil demand from the Asian giant, or to a drop in prices.
As a result, they write, a sustained decline in demand or prices is likely to see Angola’s economy shrink this year by even more than the 0.3% currently foreseen.
It is, according to the analysts, not only reduced Chinese demand that is the danger, but also a possible impact on Chinese foreign investment. Here, Angola is once more among countries that the report focusses on, noting that it was among the five largest recipients of Chinese investment in 2017, along with South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Nigeria.
Fitch Solutions has already revised down its growth forecast for China for this year due to the effect of the epidemic, seeing gross domestic product expanding by 5.6% instead of the 5.9% previously estimated. That, in turn, is set to bring down the market prices for commodities, including oil and minerals, which dominate the exports of much of Africa.
Oil-exporting countries such as South Sudan, Angola and Congo are the most vulnerable to falls in commodity prices, particularly as they already face considerable political and budgetary challenges.
Angola last year exported about 479 million barrels of oil at an average price of $65.2 (€59.2 euros) per barrel, for total revenues of US$31.2 billion, according to data released at the end of January by Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Petroleum.
The main destinations for the country’s exports by value were China (72%), Spain (6%) and India (5%).
