Lusa - Business News - Angola: Joint study with Namibia on 600MW hydroelectric plant![]()
Johannesburg, Nov. 13, 2019 (Lusa) - The governments of Angola and Namibia are studying the creation of a border hydroelectric project with an estimated global value of $1.3 billion (€1.1 billion) and an installed capacity of 600MW. A source from the project's technical office told Lusa that the Baynes hydroelectric project, presented by the two countries to investors at the African Investment Forum in Johannesburg, was located on the international section of the Cunene River, on the border between the two neighbouring countries, downstream of the Ruacana power plant and the Epupa falls, or Monte Negro, as they are known on the Angolan side. The transnational project will be developed under a treaty to be signed between the governments of the two countries. The completion of the technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies is scheduled for the first quarter of next year. "There is a treaty agreement, we are working on this document jointly between Angola and Namibia and the intention is to close this process by the end of next year". The estimated global value of the project is $1.3 billion, based on preliminary studies carried out. It is expected to structure the project within the framework of a public-private partnership. The project aims to produce electricity for southern Angola and northern Namibia and is integrated into the electricity distribution system of the entire southern region of Africa, the source of the joint technical office told Lusa.
