Lusa - Business News - Angola: Cuando Cubango province suspends logging operations![]()
Luanda, Nov.13,2019 (Lusa) - Logging has been suspended in Cuando Cubango province, due to the lack of control of activity in that region of southeastern Angola, the provincial government said. The measure is part of a final statement issued after the third meeting of the provincial government, which, among other issues, analysed the situation of forest devastation, which the authorities considered worrying. The document, cited on Wednesday by Angolan news agency Angop, said that lifting the suspension of activity would depend on a meeting between the ministry of agriculture and forests and the local government where the situation would be discussed. According to the statement, the governor of the province, Júlio Bessa, visited the province's capital headquarters at the end of October and noted with concern the cutting of Mussivi-type timber, whose exploitation has already been banned. In 2018, the Angolan government banned cutting down Mussivi trees for a period of two years, to relieve the pressure on them, caused by the 2016 and 2017 forestry campaigns. Fires and poaching are also a concern for local authorities, which have given guidance to municipal administrations, municipal and communal commands of the National Police and inspectors, to intensify the fight against these practices. In the province of Huíla, local administrators denounced the anarchic felling of trees for the opening of agricultural fields and the production of charcoal, a recurring practice in the municipalities of Caconda, Caluquembe and Chicomba. The concern was presented during the 3rd ordinary meeting of Huíla provincial government and the municipal administrator of Chicolba, Dina Domingos, stressed that the felling of trees to produce charcoal and its commercialisation has been a means of livelihood for local families. "Indiscriminate logging, by some people, is one of the constraints in several municipalities," said Dina Domingos, cited on Wednesday by Jornal de Angola. For at least two years, there have been several public complaints, with videos and photographs, about indiscriminate logging in Angola, mainly in the east of the country, with the transport of logs between provinces, which is prohibited by law. Angola has an estimated forest area of 69.3 million hectares, representing 55.6% of its land area, and commercial wood reserves estimated at 4.5 billion cubic metres. NME/RCR/IMYN // ADB.
