Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Country cannot 'accommodate conflict' with gas wealth - president

Maputo, Nov. 13, 2019 (Lusa) – Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday said that the country cannot continue to put up with conflicts, because it has to work out everything regarding investments in gas and oil capable of making it prosperous quickly.
"The country has everything to work out, but that depends on us Mozambicans," he said, including the security aspects that the authorities have been dealing with.
We cannot remain distracted by conflicts, hindering the future and growth of a nation that can be prosperous very quickly, with the impetus of investments in natural gas, Filipe Nyusi added.
He was speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the 6th Mozambique Gas Summit, an annual event that brings together companies in the sector, at a time when the country is three years away from starting production and export of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
Filipe Nyusi called for security at a time when there are threats in the centre and north of the country.
In the centre, armed groups have killed 10 people since August in attacks against civilians and authorities, in a stronghold of guerrillas of the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), who have been divided - and Renamo's leadership is distancing itself from the violence and says it is faithful to the peace agreement of 6 August.
In the north, a wave of attacks that started in radicalised mosques in Cabo Delgado province has already killed 300 people in the region where the LNG megaprojects are being set up.
Each Mozambican is called to have this individual and collective responsibility, to defend the peace and security of the country, because it is from this responsibility that the country can evolve, said Nyusi, re-elected on 15 October for a second term of five years, with his party, the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), to extend the parliamentary majority to more than two-thirds of seats.
Liquefied natural gas mega-projects will start operating in 2022 and are expected to put Mozambique among the world's largest producers in the next 10 years, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicting that the country's economy could grow by more than 10% a year.
Investments of around $50 billion (€45.4 billion) have been made by two consortia operating in areas 1 and 4 of the Rovuma basin off the northern coast of Mozambique, led by the oil companies Total, Exxon Mobil and Eni.
