Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: 4 injured in armed attack on goods trucks in centre of country

Chimoio, Mozambique, Sept. 17, 2019 (Lusa) - A group armed with AK47 machine guns, attacked two goods trucks, wounding four occupants in Zimpinga, central Mozambique, one of the victims and the authorities told Lusa on the spot on Tuesday.
The two drivers were shot and seriously injured, while two assistants escaped with minor injuries.
"One person was shooting from the side of the road," one of the drivers, Ernesto Salomão, told Lusa, whose vehicle was immobilized at the scene and where it is possible to count seven bullet holes in the cabin.
The attack occurred at around 04:00 hours (one hour less in Lisbon) on a section of the EN6 road next to a hilly area in the district of Gondola, Manica.
The EN6 is the main road corridor in central Mozambique, connecting the city of Beira on the Indian Ocean to the African inland countries.
The driver of the other truck, even though injured, continued driving until he was able to report the case to the police authorities, who assigned a contingent to the scene.
Armando Amadeu, director of the Gondola District Hospital, told Lusa that the two drivers suffered various injuries, with bullets in their legs and arms.
When Lusa was at the scene of the attack, a military cessation of hostilities observation team arrived to investigate the incident but did not make a statement.
There is no information on who the possible perpetrators of the attack are.
Central Mozambique has historically been the scene of armed confrontations between government forces and the Renamo opposition.
After the peace accord signed on 6 August, an unknown number of Renamo guerrillas remain in the area, contesting the party's leadership and threatening to use their weapons if they are not heard - but who, in turn, also claim to be persecuted by other unknown elements.
