Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Savannah, Rio Tinto granted licences to mine heavy-sands deposits

Maputo, Sep.10,2019 (Lusa) – Savannah Resources, a UK-quoted mining company, said on Tuesday that it had, in a consortium with Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian multinational, received Mozambique government licences to mine some of the world’s largest heavy-sands deposits.
" The conditional award of these mining concessions represents a major milestone for both the project and for Savannah, and places our joint venture with Rio Tinto on a very solid foundation,” a statement from Savannah quoted its chief executive, David Archer, as saying. “Given that the demand for global titanium feedstocks remains very strong, these mining concessions hold the potential as a significant global project within the sector.”
The two contiguous licenses cover a total area of 28,000 hectares in Inharrime and Jangamo districts, in Inhambane province, in southern Mozambique. Prospection points to the existence of 4.4 billion tons of resources with a degree of heavy minerals of around 3.9%.
The statement describes the Mutamba project as “one of the most significant undeveloped heavy mineral sands deposits in the world”.
The concessions are valid for 25 years (to 2044), with the possibility of their being extended for an equal period.
Savannah currently has 20% in the consortium with Rio Tinto, a stake that may increase to 35% after the delivery of the preliminary feasibility study, which is currently being undertaken, and eventually up to 51% after the delivery of the final study, the statement concludes.
Heavy sands are Mozambique’s sixth biggest export product, accounting for $210 million in 2017, according to the yearbook of the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE).
Minerals usually referred to as "heavy sands" - tiny crystals extracted from sand - are used in industrial applications such as pigment inks, abrasion systems and insulation, or the production of materials with specific properties.
