Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Japan loans €40.6M for maintenance of Maputo electricity plant

Maputo, Aug. 23,2019(Lusa)-Japan lent the equivalent of €40.6 million to Mozambique on Friday for maintenance and management of the Maputo Gas Combined Cycle Thermoelectric Plant.
The plant was inaugurated a year ago and produces 106 megawatts of electricity, feeding the cities of Maputo, the country's capital, and Matola.
The plant, estimated to have cost €155 million, was 90% financed by Japan and is operated by a group of around 70 people recruited and trained in Mozambique and Japan.
After a year of full operation, the funds now focus on the maintenance and management of the project.
The Japanese Ambassador in Mozambique, Toshio Ikeda, and the Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Pacheco, signed on Friday in Maputo, the loan agreement worth 4,788 million Yen (equivalent to €40.6 million).
"As a result, a long-term maintenance contract will be possible," the Japanese diplomatic representation announced in a statement.
The agreement "will make possible the continuation of maintenance and proper management, through verification, supply of spare parts and technology transfer through joint work" of the two countries.
