Lusa - Business News - East Timor: Nationwide blackout due to circuit malfunction at main power station

Dili, Aug. 19, 2019 (Lusa) – The whole of East Timor, with the exception of the enclave of Oecusse, was on Sunday left without electricity due to a malfunction in one of the circuits of the country’s main power station, in Hera, east of the capital, the authorities announced.
Power company Eletricidade de Timor-Leste (EDTL) reported that the "total blackout" started around 9 p.m., but that technicians were working to solve the problem. Until then, "provisionally electricity for East Timor will be totally cut off."
The only part of the country that is not affected by the total blackout is the enclave of Oecusse, where the electricity supply is provided by an independent plant in Sakato, in the eastern part of the Special Administrative Region of Oecusse-Ambeno (RAEOA).
Shortly after the blackout, the minister of public works, Salvador Pires, went with members of his team to Hera to look into the situation, posting photos of the visit on social media.
His ministry’s page on Facebook explained that EDTL technicians, aided by the company Wartsila, were working to solve the problem, but did not give any prediction for when the problem would be solved.
The blackout affected telecommunications, with connection problems in some networks. The city of Dili was almost wholly in the dark, with some buildings such as hotels, embassies, the central government building and some residential condominiums using private generators.
In recent weeks, the government has been repairing several malfunctions at different points around the capital, including streetlamps, some of which have not worked for years.
Repairs and improvements in the network are part of preparations for celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the referendum in which the vast majority of East Timor’s people voted for independence on 30 August 1999.
