Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Former Credit Suisse banker says to having received millions

Lisbon, Jul.22,2019 (Lusa)-A former Credit Suisse banker said he received millions of dollars under a scheme involving $2 billion (€1,781 million) in loans to Mozambican state-owned companies, Bloomberg reported.
Andrea Pearse, 49, a former director-general of the Swiss financial institution, admitted guilt in the fraud case in a federal court in Brooklyn, New York.
According to Bloomberg, it is unclear whether Pearse is cooperating with U.S. authorities.
His confession and other reports about the scheme are still confidential.
His attorney, Lisa Cahill, and Mark Bini, a federal prosecutor, refused to comment on the matter at the end of the hearing.
Pearse is the second manager of Credit Suisse bank tom plead guilty in the fraud case and money laundering scheme.
Detelina Subeva, former vice president of the institution's global financial unit, had confessed in May her involvement in a money-laundering conspiracy.
Credit Suisse spokesperson Karina Byrne declined to comment on the case.
According to Bloomberg, Pearse, who is to face up to 20 years in jail, admitted to having helped arrange bank loans to three companies owned and controlled by the Mozambican government and received millions of dollars in return.
The former banker identified the companies involved: Proindicus SA, Mozambican de Atum SA, or Ematum, and Mozambique Asset Management (MAM), Bloomberg said.
Proindicus was to carry out coastal surveillance, Ematum participated in tuna fishing, and MAM aimed to build and maintain shipyards, according to prosecutors.
Former Mozambican finance minister Manuel Chang, three former Credit Suisse bankers and a Privinvest mediator were arrested in December at the request of the US courts.
The investigation alleges that the $2.2 billion (€1.97 billion) financing operation to set up the Mozambican state-owned companies Ematum, Proindicus and MAM during President Armando Guebuza's term of office is a vast case of corruption and money laundering.
In February, several people were arrested by the Mozambican justice system - including some close to the former Mozambican head of state – that had an open case since 2015, but without any arrest.
The country was cut off from foreign aid in 2016 after debts were revealed.
The country's gross domestic product is on the verge of growing with the start of natural gas exploitation off the northern coast (Rovuma basin) in 2022 and this revenue has been pointed out as a solution to pay off the creditors' share.
