Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Prime minister to open last state of nation debate before elections

Lisbon, Jul. 10, 2019 (Lusa) – Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, is to open the state of the nation debate in parliament on Wednesday, the last of this legislature three months before the 6 October elections.
There is to be a total of almost four hours for the government, left-wing majority and right-wing opposition to discuss the situation in the country, four years after the parliamentary agreement among the Socialists, Left Bloc, Communists and Greens.
The 2015 legislative elections gave a victory to the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats, which had been in power since 2011, but they could not manage to get an absolute majority of MPs in parliament.
For the first time since the 1974 revolution, the left-wing parties agreed to support a minority government led by Socialist António Costa, which has lasted for the last four years.
The plenary discussion is scheduled for 2:30 this afternoon and António Costa has up to 40 minutes for his initial speech.
All other parties in parliament will then be able to raise questions.
