Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Work starts on Douro-Duero cross-border wine route - first in Iberia

Torre de Moncorvo, Portugal, May 20, 2019 (Lusa) - The Duero-Douro European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) has begun work on setting up the first wine route taking in both Portugal and Spain, under a European Union programme aimed at promoting cross-border development.
The first step was taken with the creation of a logo that is to be the brand image of the new wine route, and which was dreamed up by 25 young shortlisted creatives from Portugal and Spain who gathered for a working day in Torre de Moncorvo, in Portugal’s Bragança district.
"The presentation of the logo of the route sets in motion a fantastic itinerary that fills border areas with activities and unifies them through tourism and gastronomy, to guide and involve all those interested in an area of surprising landscapes and excellent wines [such as] the international Douro frontier," José Luís Pascual, director-general of the AECT, the permanent cross-border cooperation group for the area, explained to Lusa.
This, he said, is a "pilot project" for driving development in thinly populated rural areas along the border between Portugal and Spain.
The new route brings together 213 localities on both sides of the border, seeking to use wine, gastronomy and landscape as factors of economic development.
"We started this project precisely through the creativity of the youngest in our territory, who drew up what will be the great symbol of this project,” Pascual said, adding that it “began in the border zone and … will now be publicised internationally to promote the wine route.”
The wine route should be a way of attracting tourists to areas where fine wines are produced, such as Portugal’s Douro Superior (Upper Douro) and Spain’s provinces of Zamora and Salamanca, upriver along the Duero, as it is known in that country.Portuga "These territories, despite all their eco-tourism potential, are not yet well explored," argued Pascual.
