Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: EU promotes rural development through community radios

Chidenguele, Apr. 22, 2019 (Lusa) - The government of Mozambique and the European Union on Monday launched a programme aimed at promoting local development through community radios, the authorities revealed at a public ceremony.
The initiative, titled Rural Markets Programme for Community Radios, is aimed at boosting productivity and competitiveness in rural areas through radio broadcasts and also involves training employees at radio broadcasters in the provinces of Inhambane, Sofala and Gaza - where the programme was launched, in the administrative post of Chidenguele.
Training programmes will cover subjects like agricultural technologies, legislation and business opportunities.
The programme will also provide equipment like computers, recording devices and microphones for radios and train contributors to journalism.
The main objective is to "inform and help local producers, trade companies and other economic actors to use public services to stimulate the economy and local growth," the EU and the Mozambican government said.
The initiative is part of The Local Economic Development Programme (ProDEL), funded by the EU and the government of Sweden.
The EU supports ProDEL with 80% of the total amount of €32.5 million, which includes co-funding by the government of Sweden (€4.7 million) and the government of Mozambique (€4.6 million).
The programme is part of the Cooperation Agreement signed by the EU and Mozambique in the framework of the 10th European Development Fund.
