Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Court orders pre-trial detention of former president's son

Maputo, Feb. 18 (Lusa) - The court of Maputo on Monday ordered the pre-trial detention to Ndambi Guebuza, a son of Mozambique's former president Armando Guebuza, as part of an ongoing investigation into the state's 'hidden debt' scandal, sources linked to the case told Lusa.
Of a total of nine suspects detained since Thursday by the Mozambican authorities, this is the second person close to the former president to be held in pre-trial detention, after Inês Moiane, who was his father’s personal secretary.
Guebuza said that his arrest had political motivations, in an electoral year in which the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, the party in power) must present results, the Mozambican press said, which quoted his lawyer, Alexandre Chivale.
“If the goal is to sacrifice the Guebuza family because of the election, then I [Ndambi Guebuza] must be the last of the family to be sacrificed,” Chivale said, quoting his client during the interrogation.
Mozambique has general elections scheduled for 15 October.
Elias Moaine, the nephew of Inês, has been released on bail of 1 million meticals (€14,000).
Now being held on remand are António do Rosário, deputy director of the three public companies at the centre of the scandal (Ematum, Proindicus and MAM), Gregório Leão, former director of the State Security and Information Service (SISE), Bruno Tandade, a former SISE operative, Inês Moiane and Teófilo Nhangumele, who is alleged to have come up with the idea of setting up the companies and seeking the loans.
In addition to these five, who were detained on Thursday, Sérgio Namburete and Sidónio Sitoe, were detained on Friday.
The nine detentions follow three and a half years of investigations and after a US court issued an international warrant for the arrest Manuel Chang, a former finance minister of Mozambique, who was detained on 29 December in South Africa. He is awaiting his extradition hearing in custody.
The US charge sheet contains correspondence and documents that led prosecutors to conclude that the three public companies were used as part of a corruption and money laundering scheme with a view to enriching several suspects.
Sources close to the case say that further detentions could take place in the next few days.
